Veterinary physicians that work in cat's homes found out that newly arrived cats acclimate better if they have their personal empty boxes to hide in. After some time they were more inclined to communicating with people.
The reason is that hiding is a natural reaction for cats that experience stress. Living in the wilderness, cats hide in caves, tree hollows and on trees. Housecats use boxes for this purpose.
Hiding in a box can help your cat to overcome conflicts
Scientists say that cats do not tend to resolve conflicts as other animals do, they prefer avoiding the opponent instead.
You could say that they'd rather hide from problems than solve it. However, cats hide in boxes even being in a good mood.
When it's getting colder...
It's well known that cats like hiding not only in boxes but also in some other small shelters. We can suppose that it's easier for them to warm themselves hiding in a small place.
According to some researches, cats feel comfortable at the temperature from 30 to 36 ºС. This is not a surprise - cats came from a deserts. They love sunny spaces, warm objects and small areas. By the way, cardboard has good heat insulation properties.
They like the sound!
Some cats love rustling. Cardboard boxes make quite pleasant noise when you scratch it. Besides, the noise is enhanced by the echo inside of the box.

I had a cat that loved the song Silent Night. He would lay on me and pet my face when I sang to him. He would give me a gentle slap if I stopped and he wanted to hear more. He liked other songs but Silent Night was his favorite.

Makes sense as when a mama cat is going to give birth she will usually find someplace to have her kittens and if offered a box say under the kitchen table or in a spare room the cat will give birth and not move the kittens until they are able to explore on their own.

My cat is spoiled! She has a cat tree and will sometimes sleep in the top of it. She likes playing in boxes. But her favorite sleeping place is on my bed, right next to the pillow. The only time she doesn't sleep there is if my grand-daughter is around, because the little one (only 4) likes to chase her around too much. Then she sleeps either under my bed, or behind the couch
