Young women applied tight binding to their feet, which prevented them from growing. It resulted in serious health problems and lifelong disabilities. Women with bound feet weren't able to live a full life and work.
Anyway, bound feet were considered highly appealing, and by the 19th century 40% of all Chinese women had lotus feet. Chinese reformers made multiple attempts to end the practice, but foot binding started dying out only at the beginning of the 20th century.

Modern women are crazy about eyelashes, but it hasn't always been this way. In the middle ages, the forehead was considered the most beautiful part of the face, so women preferred to get rid of everything that could have distracted attention from it. They removed most of their eyebrows and eyelashes.

This beauty trend was called Ohaguro. To achieve black lacquered teeth, women drank an iron-based black dye tempered with aromatic spices. It was mainly done by married women to symbolize their submission to men.

The strangest part of this procedure was that the Romans used only Portuguese urine for this purpose. Their urine was considered the strongest one in the world.

Ancient Egyptians were big fans of lipstick, and it was not only a matter of beauty. They needed to protect their lips from tough winds and harsh sun. Egyptians used iodine, mannitol and bromine in production at first, but this combination turned out to be harmful. They soon learned to get carmine from ants and bugs and started using this red dye to paint their lips. Maybe it sounds disgusting and weird, but the same dye made from bugs is still used in production of some makeup products today.

Early 20th century,after Marie Curie discovered Radium and Polonium and Radiactivity,women would use Radium for their hair and teeth. It was considered a fad when in the evenings they all 'glowed' only to realize how deadly it was later.

You forgot about Radium.After it was discovered by Marie Curie,its property of radiating in the dark was exploited mostly by women to rinse their teeth or to be used in shampoos so their hair would glow in the dark.Even a famous watchmaker employed female workers to paint their watch-dials using very fine brushes which the persom would moist it in their mouths.Most of these people died of various cancers which was contributed to the use of Radium because it was Radioactive and highly toxic,which unfortunately even Marie Curie didn't realize at the time.
