Egyptians used iodine, mannitol and bromine in production at first, but this combination turned out to be harmful. They soon learned to get carmine from ants and bugs and started using this red dye to paint their lips. Maybe it sounds disgusting and weird, but the same dye made from bugs is still used in production of some makeup products today.
